What to Expect in Phase 4: Improve Average Glucose

A meter showing lower ABG next to a calendar of healthy activitiesIn Phase 4, you will be learning how to reduce your Average Blood Glucose (ABG). Use your CGM to see your ABG numbers and talk to your care team if you’re feeling stuck.

The Goal for this Phase: 

Get your ABG to less than 140 mg/dL
(for minimum of 14 days).

How to Use Your CGM in this Phase:

Freestyle Libre users

  • Open the Freestyle Libre 2 app.  
  • Click the menu icon in the top left and select Average Glucose 
  • Select 14 on the bottom bar to show 14 days of CGM data.  
  • Observe average glucose below the graph.

Dexcom users 

  • Download the Dexcom Clarity app to your smartphone and log in using your G6 email and password. 
  • Select 14 on the top bar to show 14 days of CGM data. 
  • Observe average glucose in glucose tile.

Test your knowledge with a CGM break:

  • Experiment – Take a one-week break from wearing a CGM, but focus on the behaviors you’ve been using to keep your TIR > 70%. 
  • Become a predictor – Use your CGM to test your glucose predictions.
  • Analyze – When you put your next sensor on, compare your TIR after one week of no CGM to TIR before.
  • Keep going – Start to use your CGM less unless needed for insulin dosing/on any insulin, continue wearing unless instructed by a provider.
